London Chinatwon
London's Chinatown is a commercial area predominantly by the Chinese community. It is in the Soho area within the City of Westminster. The closest Tube station (about 200 meters away from Chinatown) is Leicester Square. Gerrard Street is the center and the main street of London's Chinatown. Two ornamental Chinese arch gates, or Paifang, are located at the entrance and the end of the Gerrard Street. Even the famous English phone booths here incorporate some combinations of British and Chinese cultures- with the Chinese Pagoda-style sloping roofs.
Chinatown (China town) in London

Chinatown in London, UK The main reasons to see in London's Chinatown are the expressions of Chinese culture and the Eastern ambient, and of course for a delicious Chinese meal. In the Chinatown one can find many Chinese shops and some of the city's best Chinese restaurants (such as Wong Kei located on Wardour Street), although the quality and value vary enormously between individual restaurants. There are a couple of souvenir shops for tourists. The shops, including Chinese food markets and Chinese bookstores, of Chinatown primarily exist to serve the city's Chinese community.

The Chinese New Year festival in London is worth seeing, though Gerrard Street can get unbelievably crowded, as the dragon dancers pass along the street to collect goodies hung from windows above the shops. In recent years, the festival has expanded south into Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square to try to alleviate the congestion.

The Chinese community in London dates back to the mid 1800s. Between 1854 and 1856 many Chinese seamen were housed at the 'Oriental Quarters' in Shadwell near the present day Wapping underground station. The growth in the Chinese seamen was spurred on by the Chinese tea trade via Canton.

London's first Chinatown sprang up in the East Ends Limehouse area in the 1860s and existed until 1950, although at its height there was no more than 4,000 Chinese living there. Chinese seamen (mainly Shanghainese and Cantonese) settled there to escape the cramped lodgings provided by the East India company.

London BusThe Chinese community remained a vibrant community until 1934, in an attempt to disperse the community a plan by the Stepney Borough council to widen Limehouse Causeway and Pennyfields succeeded in clearing many of the shops and houses in the area. The Blitz and postwar decline in the shipping industries in the docks had a devastating effect on the community. Post War development around Pennyfields completed the destruction of Chinatown in Limehouse.

The next major wave of immigration came in 1960s land and agricultural reform brought many workers to Britain mainly from Hong Kong in search of a new livelihood. Many settled in Soho and Bayswater, drawn to the booming Chinese restaurant trade, helped by the returning British soldiers from the war in the Far East. With the success of the trade the area soon came to be known as Chinatown.
